Frequently Asked Questions – 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek
The 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek to Machu Picchu is one of Peru’s most exhilarating trekking experiences. This adventure blends dramatic Andean landscapes, cultural encounters, and the unforgettable finale at Machu Picchu. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions to help you prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime journey with SUNRISE PERU TREK Travel & Tours.
1. How long is the Salkantay Trek?
The full Salkantay Trek covers approximately 89 km (55 miles) through the Peruvian Andes. On the 3-day Salkantay Challenge Trek, the route is designed for strong and motivated trekkers, combining the most scenic and demanding sections of the trail, including a maximum altitude of 4,600 m (15,091 ft) at the Salkantay Pass.
2. How difficult is the 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek?
This trek is classified as challenging and is recommended for travelers with a good level of physical fitness. You’ll hike 8–9 hours per day, often on steep terrain and at high altitude.
While no technical climbing is required, altitude, long distances, and changing weather conditions make this trek demanding. We strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before departure.
3. What is the most challenging part of the trek?
The most demanding section is reaching the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m / 15,091 ft). Cold temperatures, wind, and altitude make this ascent physically and mentally challenging—but also incredibly rewarding.
Our SUNRISE PERU TREK guides carry emergency oxygen and monitor all participants closely to ensure safety throughout the trek.
4. Is there cell phone coverage during the trek?
Cell phone service is very limited along the Salkantay route due to the remote mountain terrain. Some GSM phones (AT&T / T-Mobile) may receive occasional signal in lower areas, but coverage is unreliable.
For safety, our guides carry emergency communication equipment, allowing contact in case of emergencies. We recommend enjoying the trek as a true digital detox experience.
5. What is the weather like on the Salkantay Trek?
Weather conditions vary greatly due to altitude changes and multiple microclimates.
High-altitude areas: Cold, windy, and possibly snowy
Lower valleys: Warmer and more humid
Dry season: April to October (cold nights, sunny days)
Rainy season: November to March (lush scenery, more rain)
Proper layering and rain gear are essential year-round.
6. What is the difference between the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail?
The Salkantay Trek is more rugged, scenic, and less crowded, offering dramatic mountain landscapes and a stronger sense of adventure. No trekking permit is required.
The Inca Trail is shorter, more regulated, and includes archaeological ruins along the way, but permits are limited and sell out months in advance.
Many travelers choose Salkantay for its raw beauty, flexibility, and challenge.
7. What is the minimum age for the 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek?
The minimum recommended age is 12 years old. Participants must be in good physical condition and able to hike for long periods at high altitude.
Parents should carefully assess their child’s stamina, hiking experience, and comfort with challenging environments.
8. What is the best time to hike the 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek?
The best months are May to October, during the dry season. May, June, September, and October offer excellent conditions with clear skies and moderate daytime temperatures.
Rain is possible at any time, so proper preparation is essential regardless of the season.
9. Can I hike the 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek independently?
While independent trekking is possible, it is not recommended for this challenging route. The trail can be difficult to navigate, weather conditions change quickly, and altitude can pose serious risks.
Booking with SUNRISE PERU TREK Travel & Tours ensures:

Your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities.
10. Can I do the 3-Day Salkantay Challenge Trek with children?
