The trek starts at the village of Mollepata, at three hours by car from Cusco. Salkantay is an awesome Peak that offers remote hikes. Salkantay means Savage Mountain (in Quechua language); it’s located within the Vilcabamba mountain range, to the northwest of Cusco. Salkantay is one of the highest and most spectacular mountains in the Andes (6,271m/20,574ft). Salkantay trek is named by National Geographic’s Adventure Travel Magazine among the 25 Best Treks in the World.

Salkantay Trek FAQs

HOW FAR DO WE WALK EACH DAY?

The amount you walk each day varies. An average day is 5-8 hours, but on summit night combined with the following day you can walk between 8 and 10 hours. Have a look at the itinerary for a day-to-day account.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THE SALKANTAY TREK?

For an average traveller or tourist, Salkantay trek is considered a challenging but certainly not impossible hike. Due to the physical demands, anyone who wishes to trek Salkantay should at least be moderately fit. Plus, all trekkers should spend at least 2 days in Cuzco before the trek, to get acclimatized. Being extremely fit does not grant any immunity from altitude sickness. The entire hike is approximately 72 kilometers (approximately 45 miles), and this trek takes place during 3 days and 2 nights or 4 days and 3 nights; the remaining 1 day of the trek is spent at Machu Picchu. In general, Salkantay is considered to be slightly harder than the Inca Trail. Other trails, such as Choquequirao, are considered to be slightly harder than Salkantay.

WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING SECTION OF THE SALKNATYA TREK?

The Salkantay Pass, at 4,600m /14,760 feet above sea level, is the most difficult section of the trek. Expect wind and cold temperatures. Some hikers might experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Symptoms will disappear as soon as you start your descent. Oxygen will be provided if needed. The Salkantay Pass, at approximately 4,600 meters above sea level is the most difficult section of the entire trek. These challenges are a result of several factors: the challenge of uphill climbing, bitter cold winds, low temperatures in general, and the fact that you are trekking at a low-oxygen altitude.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE FOR SALKANTAY TREK?

Most of our customers are from 18 to 75 from all over the globe. Very young children may not enjoy this. They should be able to walk (without being carried) for 90 minutes without whining (the whining part applies to children of all ages.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR SALKANTAY TREK?

You can trek all year around but we recommended during the dry season, it is the best time for this trek. In Cusco, the dry season lasts from April to November, and the wet season is from December to March. From June to September are the most popular months to do the trek, due to summer vacations in Europe and the US. It is generally thought that May and October offer the best weather conditions.

CAN I CHANGE MY STARTING DATE FOR THE SALKANTAY TREK?

Better Not: Once we have purchased your tickets for Machu Picchu and the train to return to Cusco, with your security deposit, you can only change your start date if you pay an additional amount. This amount is usually around $200 USD. The reason for this is the tickets we purchase are non-refundable and non-transferable, so we are not allowed to simply change your tour date.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FALL ILL, CAN’T KEEP UP OR THERE IS AN EMERGENCY?

The event is not run as a race and there is always a large discrepancy in people’s walking ability. This is allowed for. There will always be a staff member at the back of the group to ensure you are not left behind and can take things at your own pace. If necessary you can be carried off the mountain by mule.

WHO WILL BE LEADING THE GROUP FOR SALKANTAY TREK?

We employ a number of qualified leaders. All of them speak English. They will also be a first aid qualified medical officer. They will ultimately be responsible for the running of the itinerary and the safety of your group. The itinerary is there as a guide and may change due to unusual weather patterns, the strength of the group and so on. We will do our very best to keep to the set itinerary. However we cannot be held responsible for any last minute changes that might occur. In all such circumstances, your challenge leader will have the final say.

HOW IS SUNRISE PERU TREK ABLE TO OFFER SUCH COMPETITIVE PRICES?

We spend your money providing an authentic experience, instead of on lavish hotels and expensive western-style meals. We pass these savings on to you with our low prices. Another thing you’ll notice is the inclusions. While we don’t include everything, we do throw in the major highlights of a destination, the things that everyone goes to see. On every trip page we show you the ‘Included Highlights’ of your trip, things that many other companies charge locally for.

IF I WANT TO EXTEND MY TRIP CAN I CHANGE THE DATE OF MY FLY TICKETS?

Yes, we will make a change as long as there is space on the plane. Sometimes you will have to pay an extra US$20.00 to change the date depending on the airline

WHAT IS THE FOOD AND DRINK LIKE?

There will be a hot breakfast (porridge, eggs, toast, tea and coffee) to start the day, a packed lunch on the mountain or at your camp and a filling hot meal in the evening (soup, followed by rice, potato or pasta and sauce, but fresh fruit is difficult to find.) There will be ample drinking water, as we will be filling up from local water sources. This will need to be treated with iodine drops or tablets to purify the water. The staff will collect water each morning and evening for drinking and cooking. Please let Charity Challenge know prior to departure if you have any specific dietary requirements or allergies.

CAN I BOOK EXTRA NIGHTS OF HOTEL ACCOMMODATION BEFORE OR AFTER MY TOUR?

Yes, in most cases we can arrange additional accommodation at our starting or ending hotels. Please also note that extra accommodations must be booked outside of 30 days of departure.

  ARE AIRPORT TRANSFERS INCLUDED?

Most of our adventures do not include airport transfers and so we recommend you arrange a taxi on arrival (this is the most economical and efficient way of getting you to your hotel). If you would prefer a pre-arranged transfer these are usually available at an additional cost – please contact us for more information.

WHAT IS THE MOST APPROPRIATE TYPE OF LUGGAGE TO BRING?

We strongly recommend bringing a backpack or duffel bag, as suitcases can be cumbersome and difficult to store in buses, under seats, etc.. Keep in mind that you will normally have to carry your own luggage on and off buses and trains and up and down hotel staircases. Suitcases with wheels may not work well on dirt or cobblestone roads.

IS TIPPING INCLUDED AND IF NOT, HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET?

Tips are not included in the tour price and tipping is entirely at your discretion

Experince

Experience for Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay Trek is not a forced march and the pace is always slow, the days generally being shorter than a day hike at home.

We do recommend that you embark on a good fitness programme prior to your trip though, and one that builds up general stamina and specific leg muscle groups. There is nothing like hiking with a rucksack to train for Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, so the best advice is to get out into the hills as often as you can. You are likely to carry about 4 kilos in your day sack so this is a good weight to work with.

If you are going to be using the gym then concentrate on step machines which work on the thigh and calf muscles, and try to build your heart rate up to 50% above resting rate. Any cardiovascular activity is good, but remembers that swimming will not train the correct muscle groups so it must be added to other exercises to be effective. Exercise groups like body pump, Pilates and aerobic are all excellent preparation for a trek like this, especially those which work on core strength, balance and stability.

Support Team

Salkantay Trek Support team

The horses will carry your main bag up to a maximum weight of 7 kgs and cater for all the group needs, including assisting you if you need to go back down the valley. Unless specifically tenting, all accommodation is in tents which are top quality; except the last night will be in a 3-stars category hotel.

We run our Salkantay Trekss from a permanently staffed office in Cusco and our dedicated team provides an excellent service.

All of the guides have been employed for over ten years with us, and they have been trained to our high standards personally by Director and high altitude trekking leaders. They know how to deal with medical emergencies and speak good English. They are very attentive and after so many years have a good understanding of western needs.
