Our journey commences with a private car ride to this picturesque location, the base of the majestic Salkantay Mountain. To fully embrace this unforgettable trek, it is crucial to be in optimal physical condition, as the trail encompasses a top-notch route that demands endurance and resilience.
Permits & regulations
The 9-day Luxury Salkantay Trek, like other treks in the Cusco region, requires certain permits and regulations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. You will need an entrance fee of $10 USD for the trek and a special permit costing $50 USD to enter the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. It is highly recommended to reserve these in advance to secure your spot. If you choose to book through a trekking agency, they will take care of all the necessary arrangements on your behalf. However, if you opt to organize the trek yourself, you will need to personally collect your permit in Cusco.

DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival to Cusco.
Luxury Salkantay Trek commences upon your arrival in Cusco. Once you land at Cusco airport, our team will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in the city. Take some time to rest and acclimatize to the altitude of 3,400 masl. If you feel up to it, you can explore the city and enjoy optional activities, such as an afternoon city tour. The tour begins at 01:30 p.m and concludes at 05:30 p.m. During the guided city tour, you will visit remarkable attractions, including Qorikancha “Sun Temple,” Cusco Principal Cathedral, Saqsayhuaman Inca Complex, Tambo Machay, Qenqo, and Puca-Pucara. Day 2: Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Explore the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas on an unforgettable tour. Departing from Cusco at 08:30 a.m., our journey begins by passing Saqsaywaman and Tambomachay, taking you over the breathtaking mountains towards the fertile Sacred Valley. This lush agricultural region, known as the main gateway to Machu Picchu, continues to supply the city of Cusco with its bountiful produce, including the famous corn.
Prepare to be captivated as we visit the extraordinary Pisac Inca ruins and discover the vibrant and colorful artisan market, where you can directly purchase unique handicrafts crafted by skilled artisans. The day trip then leads us to the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, home to the remarkable Ollantaytambo Inca ruins. This well-preserved example of Inca urban planning and engineering features magnificent steep terraces guarding the Inca Fortress. It also holds the distinction of being one of the rare sites where the Spaniards suffered a significant defeat during their conquest.
As we return, we make a quick stop to explore the famous church and archeological site in Chinchero before arriving back in Cusco around 06:30-07:00 p.m. Rest and relax in comfortable accommodations provided at a hotel in Cusco. Embark on this exclusive tour and create memories that will last a lifetime. Join us on this extraordinary adventure through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Day 3: Cusco to Salkantay – Mountain Lodge & Adventure – Soraypampa 3,800 masl.
After an energizing breakfast, guests will embark on an exciting trek starting from their hotel in Cusco. Accompanied by an experienced MLP guide and a comfortable vehicle, we will make our way towards the enchanting Salkantay Lodge & Adventure Resort in Soraypampa. Along the journey, we will make a brief stop to explore the ancient Inca ruins of Tarawasi near Limatambo.
Continuing on our path, we will pass through the picturesque mountain village of Mollepata, where we will pause for a delightful coffee break. From there, we will ascend a winding mountain road to Marcoccasa, where our trek to Soraypampa will commence. This scenic six-hour hike follows the trail of the revered “Camino Real” (Royal Path), allowing plenty of time for acclimatization and mesmerizing views. The lodge derives its name from the magnificent Salkantay Mountain, the second most sacred peak in Inca mythology and the region’s highest point at 6,270 masl (20,600 ft).
Upon arrival, our warm and welcoming staff will greet us and assist with settling into our rooms. After freshening up, we will indulge in a delightful tea and cookies, followed by a cozy briefing around the crackling fireplace, accompanied by aperitifs and a delicious dinner.
- Trekking Time: Approximately 6 hours, including a picnic lunch on the way.
- Hiking Level: Moderate.
- Optional: Guests who prefer not to trek can conveniently be transported to the lodge by vehicle.
Day 4: Salkantay Lodge at Soraypampa 3,800 masl.
After a delicious breakfast, embark on a 4-hour trek around the breathtaking area surrounding Salkantay Lodge. One of the highlights of this hike is a visit to the mesmerizing Humantay Lake, nourished by majestic glaciers high up on Mountain Humantay. While the hike is optional, the view is truly worth it, and those who dare can even take a refreshing swim in the lake. This activity is perfect for acclimatization. Once you return to the lodge, relish a sumptuous lunch, and you have the option to unwind in our outdoor jacuzzi instead of taking a glacial swim. The night awaits at Salkantay Lodge, with a culinary experience of gourmet food and cozy beds. In the evening, our knowledgeable guide will provide you with necessary information about the equipment and the exciting plans for the next day. Enjoy all your meals at the lodge, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

- Optional Horseback Riding Excursions: For a brief excursion, choose a 2-hour ride around Soraypampa in the afternoon, after your hike to the glacial lake (+US$60 per person).
Day 5: Trek over the Salkantay Pass 4,600 masl.
Embark on an exhilarating trek over the Salkantay Pass, reaching a staggering elevation of 4,600 masl (15,213 ft). After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we’ll set off from Soraypampa lodge towards Wayra Lodge, situated at Wayracmachay at an altitude of 3,900 masl. The trail follows the mesmerizing “Rio Blanco/White River Valley,” encircling the majestic Humantay Peak, directly across from the awe-inspiring Salkantay Peak. As we reach the highest point of the trek, the pass at 4,600 masl, prepare to be enthralled by the panoramic vistas of the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range in every direction, with the imposing south face of Salkantay towering above us. Keep your eyes peeled for the magnificent Andean condors, often visible in this area.
From the pass, we’ll commence our descent towards the Wayra Lodge, aptly named after the wind, as it’s where the wind comes to life. Along the way, indulge in a satisfying hot lunch. Our evening will be spent at the exquisite Wayra Lodge, where we will relish a delicious dinner before settling in for a restful overnight stay. (Trekking time: 6-8 hours. Hiking level: Challenging with a 4,600 masl or 15, 213 ft mountain pass).

Day 6: Wayra Lodge to Colpa Lodge (2,870 masl/9,414 ft).
Today, we’ll have a leisurely breakfast at Wayra Lodge before continuing our trek along the left bank of the Salkantay River. As we descend, the scenery becomes increasingly lush and vibrant. You’ll feel the warm air from the jungle, accompanied by colorful butterflies and stunning orchids. Once we reach Colpa Lodge, get ready for a delightful and traditional Peruvian meal called Pachamanca. It’s cooked by layering meat and vegetables with hot stones and then baked to perfection.
“Colpa Lodge” is situated on an open plateau where three rivers meet. Take a dip in the outdoor jacuzzi with panoramic views of the lush green mountains. In the afternoon, you can relax or explore the nearby orchid trail. We’ll have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. The hiking duration is approximately 3-4 hours, and the difficulty level is easy to moderate. Get ready for an unforgettable trekking experience!
Day 7: Collpa Lodge to Lucma Lodge at Lucmabamba (2,135 masl/7,003 ft).
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we’ll set off bright and early for an adventurous trek from Collpa Lodge to Lucma Lodge at Lucmabamba, situated at an elevation of 2,135 masl/7,003 ft. Our route will take us through the picturesque left side of the Santa Teresa River, through a captivating valley surrounded by vibrant and populated rural areas. Along the way, we’ll pass flourishing banana, granadilla, and avocado orchards, as well as renowned coffee plantations, known for producing some of the world’s finest organic coffee.
Midday, we’ll have a delightful hot picnic lunch by the river, where we can relax and refuel. Afterward, with renewed energy, we’ll tackle another hour of hiking before a private vehicle joins us for a short drive to the starting point of the magnificent “Llactapata Inca Trail,” which should only take around 30 minutes.
Once we reach the head of this recently-restored Inca trail, our path to Lucma Lodge, nestled amidst an avocado orchard, will be relatively easy-going. Dinner will be served at the lodge, allowing us to indulge in a well-deserved meal after an exhilarating day of trekking. We’ll spend the night at the lodge, enjoying its cozy accommodations.
Overall, the trekking duration will be approximately 5-6 hours, including our delightful lunch break. While the distance may be considered moderate to challenging, the varied terrain will keep us engaged and thrilled throughout the journey
Day 8: Lucma Lodge to “Aguas Calientes” (1,900 masl/6,232 ft).
Embarking on our thrilling adventure today, we’ll begin the final leg of our trek after a satisfying breakfast. Over the course of 2-3 hours, we’ll make our way uphill towards the remarkable Llactapata Pass (2,736 masl/8,974 ft). As we stand atop this vantage point, we’ll be greeted with a captivating and rare view of Machu Picchu Sanctuary, a sight that only a fortunate few have had the opportunity to witness.
Upon reaching the pass, we’ll pause momentarily to explore the recently restored Llactapata Ruins. Following that, we’ll indulge in a scrumptious lunch at a scenic viewpoint, where we can soak in the breathtaking panorama of Machu Picchu.
Our journey will then take us on a descent through vibrant bamboo forests, orchards, and coffee plantations, eventually leading us to the Aobamba River. From there, we’ll embark on a picturesque train ride to the enchanting town of “Aguas Calientes,” our gateway to Machu Picchu.
Arriving at “Aguas Calientes,” we’ll have the pleasure of checking into our delightful hotel and gathering for a celebratory dinner with our knowledgeable guide, accompanied by a final briefing. Trekking Time: 4–6 hours. Hiking Level: Moderate to Challenging.
Day 9: Machu Picchu (2,400 masl/7,872 ft) to Cusco.
Today, we’ll embark on an exhilarating trek from Machu Picchu (2,400 masl/7,872 ft) to Cusco. After an early buffet breakfast at the hotel, we’ll gather at the bus station for a scenic 30-minute ride to Machu Picchu Sanctuary. Led by our experienced trip leader, we’ll enjoy a captivating two-hour guided tour of the ruins, immersing ourselves in the rich history and remarkable architecture. Afterward, we’ll have the freedom to explore the site at our own pace – there’s an abundance of awe-inspiring sights and activities to indulge in.
Later, we’ll return by bus to “Aguas Calientes” for a leisurely late lunch and to meet our train. The picturesque journey from “Aguas Calientes” to Ollantaytambo will take approximately one and a half hours, followed by a comfortable private vehicle ride back to Cusco, lasting an additional hour and a half. By around 07 or 08:00 p.m, we’ll arrive in Cusco and be conveniently dropped off at our hotel.
