Salkantay Trek

Three important items for Salkantay Trekking

1.- What is the Weather on Salkantay Trek?

The short answer is that the temperatures on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu range from hot to bitter cold. The journey from the gate to the pass is like traveling from the Amazon to Antarctica and descent to Amazon in a matter of days. This is because the routes to the highest pass cross different ecological zones. The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu has five major ecological zones, each approximately 3,280 feet (1,000 m) in altitude. Each zone is subject to a corresponding decrease in rainfall, temperature and life as the altitude increases.

Mollepata, the gateway town from which our Salkantay Trekking are organized, is located just south of the Salkantay Mountain. At 2,800 meters above sea level, the town is located in the, warm ecological zone.

December to April is the warmest months, but they are the wettest months, June and July are the coolest months, and August and September are the driest months; these generalities about the weather in in the town of Mollepata and for the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu as well.

Due to its proximity to the equator, Salkantay Mountain does not experience wide temperature changes from season to season. Instead, the temperatures on the Salkantay Trek are determined more so by the altitude and time of day.

2.- What Gear Do I Need to Carry in my Day Pack for Salkantay Trek?

For trekking Salkantay, you are only required to carry items from your gear list that you may need prior to reaching your next campsite. A small to medium sized backpack, with a volume capacity of up to 2000 cu in (30 liters), is appropriate. The specific items to carry generally depend on the time to reach camp and trail and weather conditions. Typically, you will have inside your daypack: waterproof gear, extra clothing, water, snacks, gloves, hat, sunglasses, and other small items, such as bug repellent and sun screen. Consult your guide if you are unsure of what you need.

For the Salkantay Trekking, everything else should be placed into your duffel bag, which the porters will carry. The weight limit of the duffel bag is 8 kgs. The porters will carry the duffel bag from campsite to campsite. Use plastic bags or dry bags to separate and water proof your gear. You will be expected to pack your daypack and duffel bag each morning. Note that it is acceptable to use a backpack instead of a duffel bag. However, since porters bundle the bag with other items and carry the load on their heads, a duffel bag is preferred.

3.- Where Will I Sleep?

During the Salkantay trek, the trekkers will sleep in state of the art, four-season Mountain tents. Our Mountain Hardwear tents are warm, waterproof and roomy – perfectly suited for your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. We understand that some trekkers are anxious about camping for so many days, so we aim to have them be as dry, warm and comfortable as possible. On the last night trekkers will use hotel of 3-stars category in the town of Aguas Calientes; this town is located near the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

Each four-person sized tent will comfortably house two trekkers and their gear. The interior floor space is 48 square feet, with a large vestibule, dual doors, and internal mesh pockets.

Experience for Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay Trek is not a forced march and the pace is always slow, the days generally being shorter than a day hike at home.

We do recommend that you embark on a good fitness programme prior to your trip though, and one that builds up general stamina and specific leg muscle groups. There is nothing like hiking with a rucksack to train for Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, so the best advice is to get out into the hills as often as you can. You are likely to carry about 4 kilos in your day sack so this is a good weight to work with.

If you are going to be using the gym then concentrate on step machines which work on the thigh and calf muscles, and try to build your heart rate up to 50% above resting rate. Any cardiovascular activity is good, but remembers that swimming will not train the correct muscle groups so it must be added to other exercises to be effective. Exercise groups like body pump, Pilates and aerobic are all excellent preparation for a trek like this, especially those which work on core strength, balance and stability.
